Pirate adventure, cursed treasure and a story composed for a phone screen: Beneath Crimson Sails is an independent Canadian vertical series filmed in British Columbia.
I helped produce the series, directed second unit for one shooting day, and worked as second-unit director of photography across several days. It was a chance to bring my filmmaking experience to a different frame: a pirate story built for the vertical format.

A Canadian pirate adventure
Written by Julie Bruns, who also plays Catherine, the series follows a search for the missing half of a cursed treasure map. Catherine’s quest for revenge intersects with a pirate captain whose secrets tie them to a dangerous past.
The production brought together Thunder Child Productions, Generativity Productions and WEC Films. Grace Loeppky served as director of photography, with Steven Kammerer directing and producing alongside a team of collaborating filmmakers.
Award recognition and behind the scenes
Steven Kammerer won the 2026 Verties Director’s Chair award for Beneath Crimson Sails. Congratulations to Steven and the whole team behind the series.
Blackmagic Design’s production coverage also highlights my second-unit cinematography and the team’s use of Blackmagic cameras and DaVinci Resolve. The public crew listing credits me as a producer, co-cinematographer and co-director for episodes 27–33.
